The benefits of chess

Chess is part of the curricula in over 30 countries, from all the continents.
During the last decades, several countries have conducted studies and experiments which scientifically proved the benefits of chess in developing children’s and young’s personality, with concrete results in improving their school results.

  1. Chess improves concentration; the player learns how to sit down at the desk, concerned with a problem.
  2. Chess develops logical thinking: the player applies strategic principles and analyses the consequences of his/her moves.
  3. Chess promotes imagination and creativity, it encourages you to be inventive, by creating beautiful combinations.
  4. Chess teaches independence, forcing the player to make decisions influenced only by his/her judgment.
  5. Chess develops the capability to predict the consequences of actions, an important quality for the real life, too.
  6. Chess inspires self-improvement, the search of the best move, the best plan.
  7. Chess shows that success rewards hard work; you become a good player after losing many games, but learning from your mistakes.
  8. Chess is a test of patience, nerves, will power and concentration, which enhances your ability to compete with other players, in a fair manner.
  9. Chess is improving self-confidence, offering to the physically weaker children the chance to get the winner’s mentality.
  10. Chess develops the scientific way of thinking: while playing you explore new ideas, you decide on new hypotheses and then you test them by your move.
  11. Chess develops math aptitudes, starting by the two-dimensions orientation on the chess board to the counting of a great number of combinations and to logical analysis.
  12. Chess improves the player’s management qualities; each player is a general of an army, he analyses the situation, managing the resources, attacking and defending, sacrificing, having only one goal-the MATE.
  13. Chess stimulates research; there is a lot of information in this field, which needs to be found, selected and used for self-improvement.
  14. Chess offers to the player the possibility to be an artist, to have an original style and personality.
  15. Chess offers the chance to meet interesting people, to get new friends anywhere on the Earth, during chess competitions or even if you are only an amateur player.
  16. Compared to other sports, chess is cheap and is a game for people of all ages.
  17. Chess is a pleasant way of spending time, more than the battle on the chess board; it never gets boring, no chess game ever repeats itself.
  18. Chess teaches the fair-play, to shake hands with the partner at the beginning and at the end of the game, to get used to accept a defeat in a dignified manner.
  19. Many parents, when registering their child for the chess courses, told me that one of the most important reasons was to remove him from the computer, from isolation, to bring him in contact with other children, chess players. This is another recent benefit of chess: the socializing role.
